A guide to understanding roof load limits!

One of the most common questions we get asked is 'will my car hold a roof tent'? Well, the answer for most people is...probably, but it depends on your vehicle's roof load limit! So today we're going to break that answer down a bit for you!

Dynamic Roof Load Limit

Your dynamic roof load limit is the maximum amount of weight that your vehicle can hold on the roof whilst driving. The majority of cars have a dynamic roof load limit of between 50 - 100kg. Your can find your dynamic roof load limit in your owners manual (usually towards the end near towing weights), or sometimes we use the following tool to find it: https://www.car.info/en-se/

Static Roof Load Limit
Your static roof load limit is the maximum amount of weight that your vehicle can hold on the roof whilst stationary i.e. when you're not driving. The static roof load limit is at least 5x higher than the dynamic roof load limit. So if you have a dynamic roof load limit of 75kg, your static roof load
limit will be approximately 375kg.  This has been confirmed by roof tent and car manufacturers.

Roof Load Limits & Roof Tents
Not all cars will have a large enough dynamic roof load limit to accommodate a roof tent. The lightest roof tent we stock, which is one of the lightest on the market is the Tentbox Lite 1.0 weighing in at 50kg. The average set of roof bars weighs approximately 5kg so when this is added to the weight of a roof tent, you will probably require a dynamic roof load limit of 55kg or above for your car to safely and legally accommodate a roof top tent. The largest model of roof tent we currently stock is the Tentbox Lite XL which weighs in at 62kg and sleeps up to 4 people (or 300kg). To safely and legally accommodate this roof tent your vehicle should ideally have a dynamic roof load limit of 67kg+
